Week 1

This was the first week of the second semester of my first year studying at UL and with it came a list of new modules one of which being Games And Modelling. My expectations for this module was this module was that it would be exam focused and would only go over useful programming techniques for those who would wish to pursue this as a module in the future. To my surprise this module is one that is 100% project based where you are tasked to create a game without any real creative parameters.

Hearing this information was amazing for me as in the past I have often attempted my own solo projects in making games but never got all that far due to lack of creative vision and a lack of understanding in programming, however due to me now being a college student in computer science and this now being a part of my academics, I believe i can now engage with a topic such as this with my full attention especially with my newly acquired skill sets since starting college.

Since it is only week 1 all we have to go off of so far is a Flappy Bird recreation assignment in unity to get an understanding of game engines however completing this did not provide me with a lot of new found knowledge as in my past of my own personal projects Unity and GameMakerStudio 2 were my engines of choice and out of the two GameMaker was my preferred engine so I believe i will be using that to build my project for this module.

I have not spoken to a lot of people in my course at this point so my first job will be assembling a team of which I aim to take up the producer role, I know I will have both Sean Carroll and Samuele Cannas on my team as I have worked with them previously on a HTML assignment in the last semester however the groups are supposed to made up of 6-8 members so my first job is to find members interested in engaging with me creatively.

What I Learned

    1. What this module entails.
    2. That I do not like Unity as much as GameMaker.
    3. That this a module that i can really enjoy as it will let me express myself creatively in a way that simple software development does not.

Tasks At Hand

  1. Assemble my team
  2. Divide jobs between different individuals.
  3. Start brainstorming of an idea that is fresh and unique.
