Week 11
If there is anything this module has taught me so far it is that the artistic side to game development is extremely time consuming and it is why many games that are strict time limits often do not look the best presentation wise. That is why this week I set out to make a cover for the game so that I am not cramming this in at the end and we have an underwhelming cover that does not incapsulate the vibe of the game very well.
And so with that I broke out my drawing tablet and got to drawing a cover featuring my main character who I have now decided to name Eddie, I did mention in one of the previous weeks giving things names was not one of my talents, I can’t give a solid reason as to why I chose the name other than he kinda looks like an Eddie. i wanted to capture to retro game vibe in a hand drawn cover and I did this by using bright colours that compliment Eddie’s colour scheme well that contrasted with bordering dark colours to convey that dark cave vibes that the title of the game suggests.
Take a look at this time lapse of me creating the very first Cold Caves cover art.

And so this was the result, I could easily see something like this appearing on the Nintendo eShop or Steam and considering I am no artist I am very happy with how turned out. For the games title font I decided to go with this really cool looming “sicko” font and layered it up a few times in different colours and I believe it complimented the drawing very nicely.
As I said previously I am no artist and I am not an artist however this module has taught me how creativity is applied in a field I love so much and I am appreciative. for the new skill sets I have developed during my time working on this.
I spent most of my week brainstorming for this as well as making a sword swing sound effect as well as a sound effect that would play if your attack lands.
Both of these were sounds i recorded on phone. The swing is the sound of me chopping an onion and the hit landing sound is a sound of a clap that I added delay, reverb and chorus to and I think they worked for some very effective sound effects.
